Dear Home Care Colleague,

One of the exciting aspects of home care and hospice technology is that new technologies appear so frequently. There is always something new to learn, something new to tell you about. Sometimes I feel like a baseball scout. (Hey! You should see this kid down in Carthage. What an arm! I mean, what a great software idea!)

This week, we found a new company with a technology solution to the problem of running to a safe deposit box to retrieve a patient’s Advance Directive document during an emergency. We also heard of a major home telehealth research project and a new program for nurses interested in Informatics.

It did also not go unnoticed that two articles about “meaningful use” of electronic health records, as newly defined by HHS under the ARRA law, were our most-read articles. Does this mean home care is taking an increasing interest in learning what its role will be when patient records go completely electronic? Could this be a sign our industry is maturing with regard to technology?
